Introduction
The picture above is a constant image I saw on my way home everyday during springbreak. Surely I am not talking about my home in Philadelphia; I am referring my home in Africa. I spent 10 days in the breathtaking Jembe Village in Malawi helping the villagers build an elementary school. I lived with a host family and walked everyday into the rural village. I would pass by a tabacco farm twice a day, but one day the me and the group that I was part of was able to speak to the the Tabacco farmer. We asked about the farming process and about how the crop is sold, but what stuck out to me was the way he talked about globalization effecting him. He basically said because of the health campaigns in America Tabacco companies are paying drastically less for the tabacco he is selling. Keep in mind that tabacco the cash crop of Malawi. This fact motivated me to research this phenomena and hopefully explore how tabacco changed through globalization.
